Workshops about secret codes on Valentine's Day
Sunday 14th of February 1pm - 3.30pm
Create an original message for your secret lover!
On Valentine's Day Kunsthal Rotterdam gives workshops on the enciphering and deciphering of messages in secret code. A workshop on secret code comes in handy, especially on Valentine's Day! On Sunday afternoon February 14th from 13h00 onwards Kunsthal Rotterdam teaches special workshops for children at the family exhibition ‘Made in Holland, inventions and innovations'.
The workshop offers an insight into various examples of secret code, like cuneiform, cipher and invisible writing in candle-grease. You also learn how the Enigma machine works. This very special electro-mechanical rotor machine used for the encryption and decryption of secret messages encodes messages in letter combinations that are different from the original.
At the same day, families can also co-operate on an exciting piece of art together with Toine Klaassen at the auditorium of the Kunsthal. His workshop can, in his very own words, be considered: ‘a sign of sign in the language of language'. In cuneiform you create a rebus which cannot possibly be disentwined or a thrilling message which can be read from the moon. Immediately after the workshop you can put into practice all that you have learned. And, moreover, you can send an encoded message to your secret lover - off it goes, decorated beautifully and sealed with a kiss!
