KunsthalCOOKS is back, and how! In this anniversary edition of the Festival of Real Taste, the Kunsthal is proud to present a ‘fresh' generation of producers that are overflowing with idealism when it comes to good and healthy food.

There will be lots of cooking, and visitors can taste the best products from passionate stallholders who never make concessions where Real Taste is concerned. Get acquainted with other food festivals in Rotterdam and... this year we are going to get cultivating too! Ever since its first edition in 2004, KunsthalCOOKS has been devoting attention to promoting a sustainable and healthy food culture, and in doing so has become the ‘mother' of all fair food festivals in the Netherlands. OnFriday 19, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June, we will be taking a closer look at the story behind good food.

Largest covered local produce market

The largest covered local produce market in the Netherlands forms the beating heart of KunsthalCOOKS. In this Market Hall, almost ninety predominantly small-scale producers will be displaying their wares, from bread that has been given time to rise and fruit that has been allowed to ripen, to vegetables that have come straight from the garden. There are also naturally cultivated snails from Slow Escargots, an impressive range of organic herbs from Ecoville, the latest Ark of Taste products from Slow Food, and coffee, beer and wild mushrooms all produced locally in Rotterdam. You can take these products home with you or enjoy them straight away in festival atmosphere. Moreover, this year's KunsthalCOOKS is offering a platform for the other ‘foodie' festivals that Rotterdam boasts, such as Rotterdamse Oogst (Rotterdam Harvest), Rotterdamse Kost (Rotterdam Cuisine), Rauwkost (Raw Food) and the multicultural food festival Eetplein Djemaa el Fna.

The Cooking Theatre

The Cooking Theatre is offering three days in which you can find out lots more about food. Options include listening to and watching chefs at work, and tasting the very best ingredients they can get hold of, because good food tastes better. The local cooperative kitchen Wijkkeuken van Zuid tells the story behind the Iftar meals eaten at sunset during the fast of Ramadan. There will be speakers including Jan Kruijsse, who is the Netherlands' only ‘wild' seaweed cutter, and the chefs from ‘Aan Zee', a fully sustainable restaurant located in the dunes of Oostvoorne. The United Nation's International Year of Soils is also being highlighted. Growers will be talking about the importance of healthy soils, which are the very foundation of our existence. Organic grower Dieneke Klompe, the ‘green supplier' of master chefs including Sergio Herman, who also stars in a well-known Dutch TV programme Van Hollandse Bodem (from Dutch soil), will be putting edible flowers and special herbs into the spotlight.

The Tomato Factory

The Kunsthal is taking the fifth edition of KunsthalCOOKS to the next level, extending the festival with a wonderful exhibition called ‘The Tomato Factory'. In fun fashion, visitors will be immersed in everything concerning tomatoes. Even those who have not yet been bitten by the ‘home-grown veggies bug' will be challenged to find out how tomatoes grow, and what you can make with them. By way of an ‘See and Do' trail, visitors can follow the entire growing process from seed to plant, look after their tomatoes, and from the harvest make their own home-made tomato soup or sugar-free ketchup, including a label for the packaging. Finally, connoisseurs can test their skills by blind-tasting a highly diverse range of tomatoes. Who wouldn't want to be farmer, cook and director of The Tomato Factory, all in one day?
