Janco is een van de meest onderbelichte kunstenaars van zijn tijd. Hij was een spin in het web van de internationale avant-garde en speelde een sleutelrol in de Roemeense kunstscène tijdens het interbellum.
Zijn actieve rol in Dada maakte hem tot een van de belangrijkste pioniers van deze beweging

Janco en Dada

Samen met Hans Arp, Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings en Tristan Tzara richtte Marcel Janco in 1916 Dada op in Zürich. Hij propageerde Dada in vele kunstuitingen, deed de redactie en productie van Dada-publicaties en illustreerde deze.

In 1942 vluchtte de joodse Janco naar Israël. Hier gaf hij de nieuwe staat een culturele impuls. In 1983 stichtte hij nabij Haifa, het Janco Dada museum. Dada zette zich krachtig af tegen de als formeel ervaren modernistische schilderkunst en werd opgepikt door kunstenaars en intellectuelen in verschillende Europese steden en New York.
Dada liet een recalcitrant geluid horen, vaak paradoxaal en absurdistisch. Hoewel Dada als beweging een kort leven beschoren was, is de artistieke erfenis ervan groot.

In 1997 presenteerde de Kunsthal het werk van Marcel Janco in de tentoonstelling Brancusi, Tzara en de Roemeense avant-garde.
