Following the success of the special evening openings ‘without clothing’ during the exhibitions ‘Robert Mapplethorpe. A Perfectionist’ in 2017, and ‘Hyperrealism Sculpture’ in 2018, the Kunsthal Rotterdam is again organising a Naked Tour. This time of the exhibition ‘I’m Your Mirror’. The mirroring objects and themes of the works offer reflection in a literal as well as a metaphorical sense. Immerse yourself in the larger-than-life universe of the famous Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. In the nude!
Joana Vasconcelos is known for her sharp sense of proportions, masterly use of colour and unusual choice of materials. She addresses contradictions in an outspoken and ironic way. She takes everyday objects and turns them into surprising metaphors, such as a pair of gigantic stiletto heels made from stainless steel pans, a sofa covered in strips of aspirin, a heart made from red plastic cutlery, an engagement ring made from gold-coloured car rims and whiskey tumblers, and a six-metre-high chandelier made from 14,000 tampons.
Hidden beneath the apparent light-heartedness of her work, lie social and sociopolitical themes such as oppression, human rights, gender issues and identity. In an activist and feminist way, and with a deep-rooted respect for Portuguese culture and traditions, Vasconcelos gives her own twist to reality. The result is a seductive, humorous, abundant and sometimes absurdist exhibition in which nothing is as it seems.
