Kunsthal Rotterdam presents a series of portraits of millers made by John Stoel over the last year.
These photographs provide us with an image of a profession that is slowly vanishing from The Netherlands. One century ago over ten thousand mills were still in use, nowadays that number has decreased to some twelve hundred wind -, water - and polder mills. Due to technical innovations mills have become redundant and have largely disappeared from our landscape. With this also the miller profession has become more and more rare.
