DOELENENSEMBLE – SEXTET BY STEVE REICH
13:00 hrs & 15:00 hrs (ca. 30 minutes)
Inspired by the exhibition Calder Now, the DoelenEnsemble will play a special interpretation of Sextet by Steve Reich. With the help of cameras that combine close-up images and sound, the performance can be experienced as an ‘audible sculpture’. Let yourself be transported in this combination of images and sound in the Kunsthal Auditorium. The performance will be introduced by Maarten van Veen, artistic director of the DoelenEnsemble.
DANCE PERFORMANCE INTERTWINE
14:00 hrs & 16:00 hrs (18 minutes)
Especially for the exhibition Calder Now, the choreographer Justin de Jager of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam has created the work Intertwine. Justin de Jager is a pioneer in ‘threading’, a dance style derived from breakdance. He noticed a striking connection between Calder’s mobile wire sculptures, which move in different ways and constantly offer new perspectives, and his own style of dancing. Immerse yourself in the live performance, right in the middle of the exhibition: a hypnotic spectacle with detailed movements that are endlessly threaded onto each other.
The film Intertwine will also be screened during the weekend. Justin de Jager made this production together with filmmaker Justin Bekker.

Kinetic Sounds Project by Joris Strijbos
11:30 hrs & 15:30 hrs
Discover the work Kinetic Sounds by Joris Strijbos this weekend: an installation based on the physical results of a Klankvorm audio and movement research project. The installation consists of multiple moving loudspeakers, each with its own identity with regard to sound and movement. The sound is produced by reverberating tubes and pressure chambers. How that sounds? Find out at the Kunsthal!
Snooker performance
12:00 hrs, 13:00 hrs & 15:00 hrs
Have you already seen the work of the Argentinian-born artist Rirkrit Tiravanija in Calder Now? Especially for the exhibition he created an accessible and participative piece: in the middle of the room you will come across a snooker table with white, yellow, blue and red balls. Have you always wanted to play a game of snooker underneath a work by Calder? Experience it at the Kunsthal! During the Calder Now Weekend we will even take that a step further with a special Snooker Performance by the Royal Dutch Billiards Federation.
Filmscreening Der Lauf der Dinge
16.30 hrs
Der Lauf der Dinge is a film by the Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss. Over the course of this thirty-minute film you are witness to all kinds of objects falling over, burning, or dissolving, thereby setting other objects in motion. Inspired? Start building a chain reaction of your own at the KunsthalLAB!
Tours of Calder Now (ca. 45 minutes)
Starting time at 11:00 hrs, 12:00 hrs, 13:00 hrs, 14:00 hrs, and 15:00 hrs.

Theatrical performance 'De draad van Alexander' by Tom Meijer
10:30 – 11:30 hrs
From the age of around 6 (Dutch spoken)
The interactive performance is based on the book Sieb Posthuma wrote about his favourite artist: Alexander Calder. ‘De draad van Alexander’ (Alexander Calder’s Wonderful Wire) tells the story of Alexander, a boy with the ability to make everything he dreams about with his hands. A bike, a monster, a funny animal… even a circus!
Reading of 'De draad van Alexander' (in dutch)
11:30 hrs – 15:00 hrs (ongoing)
The book ‘De draad van Alexander’ (Alexander Calder’s Wonderful Wire) by Sieb Posthuma will be read (in Dutch) by VoorleesExpress Rotterdam. The book is about Alexander, a boy who can turn everything he comes up with in his head into wire sculptures. His biggest dream? To make something that moves on its own. Find out at the Kunsthal whether he succeeded!

Workshops in building motion machines with KITE
12:00 hrs – 16:00 hrs (ongoing)
Children (ages around 6-10) accompanied by a parent/supervisor
Participate in this workshop by KITE together with your parent/supervisor. You will jointly make a moving machine which will never look the same twice. You do this with the help of a small motor, a battery and loads of different crafting materials. Each workshop takes about 20 minutes and you can take the machine you created home with you.
Snookerperformance
12:00 hrs, 13:00 hrs, and 15:00 hrs
Have you already seen the work of the Argentinian-born artist Rirkrit Tiravanija in Calder Now? Especially for the exhibition he created a snooker table with white, yellow, blue and red balls. During the Calder Now Weekend this will be the location of a special Snooker Performance in collaboration with the Royal Dutch Billiards Federation.
Snookerworkshop
11:00 hrs – 16:00 hrs (ongoing)
All ages
Did the snooker performance inspire you and made you want to have a go yourself? Professionals from the Royal Dutch Billiards Foundation will teach you the tricks of the trade – although obviously not on the artist’s snooker table. Take up the challenge and become a snooker champion!
Workshop threading with HipHopHuis
11:30 – 12:00 hrs & 13:30 – 14:00 hrs
‘Threading’ is a type of dancing derived from breakdance. During a ‘thread’, the dancer creates an opening by connecting several body parts, and subsequently threads a different body part through that opening. Does that sound complicated? During the HipHopHuis workshop you will learn how to perform this dance yourself!

Performance & workshop ‘living sculptures’
11:30 – 12:00 hrs & 13:30 – 14:00 hrs
Admire and participate! Let the Tall Tales Company inspire you and join them for the ‘living sculptures’ workshop.
Calder LAB
At the Calder LAB, families and children can set to work themselves. Let the film Der Lauf der Dinge inspire you and discover what things you need to cause your own chain reaction.

Studio Calder Now
Make an animal out of paper, experiment with balance, and create a new work of art for the square in front of the Kunsthal! In Studio Calder Now you can join the All you can Art artists to work on an assignment. Your source of inspiration will be Alexander Calder’s artworks and the major themes from his work, like positive/negative space, and simple materials. While painting and drawing you can entrust your thoughts to paper and together work on making a pop-up book.
Partner Nationale-Nederlanden
The Calder Now Weekend is also made possible by Nationale-Nederlanden.
