The Grand Summer Art Croquet
5 July, 2025 - 31 August, 2025
Kunsthal has invited the Rotterdam-based design duo Studio MAKY to create an interactive and playful installation on the steps of the Auditorium. The result? The Grand Summer Art Croquet – a whimsical croquet course where art and play come together. Starting Saturday, July 5, grab a brightly coloured mallet and make your way through six artful wickets. Challenge your friends and family and experience croquet like never before. The player who completes the course in the fewest strokes wins!
The installation puts a playful twist on the classic game of croquet, transforming it into a visually stimulating experience. Croquet originated in the 19th century as a garden game and quickly became a popular outdoor sport enjoyed by both men and women. In fact, it was even part of the Olympic Games in 1900. The game also holds an iconic place in literature, most notably in Alice in Wonderland, where Alice plays croquet using live flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as balls. This surreal atmosphere is a key source of inspiration for Kwannie Tang & Man-Yee Mok of Studio MAKY, a duo known for their large-scale interactive installations that celebrate form, colour, and imagination. Their playful projects appear in museums, at festivals, and in public spaces, inviting people of all ages to look, explore, and join in. With their work, Studio MAKY aims to connect play and imagination with art and design in an accessible and engaging way.
Participation
Joining The Grand Summer Art Croquet is free with a valid Kunsthal admission ticket. Open to everyone aged six and up. Please note: the course is located on the steps of the Auditorium and is therefore less accessible for visitors with limited mobility. No reservation required.
