For Martin Roemers (1962), one of the 2006 winners of the Portraits series of the World Press Photo, the impact of war is not an unfamiliar theme.
In recent years, he depicted military service in the Netherlands and Dutch military personnel on peace missions in former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. In this exhibition, Roemers gives World War II a face by portraying veterans from various countries and their personal stories. His intense black-and-white photographs succeed in capturing the exact moment when memory dawns on his subjects' faces and reminiscing begins.
