In collaboration with the Willem de Kooning Academy, Kunsthal Rotterdam presents a series of masterclasses – exclusively for students and Kunsthal Friends – by exceptional artists. After the inspiring series of masterclasses in 2017, with artists such as photographer Peter Lindbergh, photographer and artist Erwin Olaf, choreographer Conny Janssen and the famous architect Rem Koolhaas, it is now Dutch artist Melanie Bonajo’s turn. Bonajo is one of the four nominees of the Prix de Rome Visual Arts 2017.
Participation in this masterclass is exclusively reserved for students and Kunsthal Friends.
- Students of the Willem de Kooning Academy (upon showing a valid WdKA student card) and young people up to and including the age of 17: free admission
- CJP and students up to and including the age of 26: € 7,00
Can we send 'funny' animal videos into space for aliens to discover the Earth’s ecosystem?
This and other questions are the ones that Bonajo investigates for the second part of her trilogy, Progress vs. Sunsets (2017), which examines the extinction or endangerment of vulnerable groups through the neo-liberal thought that (economic) science is able to transform society into something ‘better’.
Progress vs. Sunsets is part of the exhibition ‘Prix de Rome Visual Arts 2017’ at the Kunsthal Rotterdam, in collaboration with the Mondriaan Fund.
Melanie Bonajo (Heerlen, 1978) lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied at the Rietveld Academy and was a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and the ISCP in New York. Her work consists of films, performances related to how technological advances and commodity-based pleasures increase feelings of alienation while removing a sense of belonging in an individual.
