Ed Valk is niet alleen geboeid door het jeugdige lichaam, ook in de rijpere jaren ziet hij een verborgen schoonheid. Soms volgt hij de contouren met een sensuele blik zonder dat dit de overhand krijgt.

Niets verbloemend realisme van Ed Valk

De tentoonstelling laat het rijpere werk van Valk zien. Opvallend is dat met het verstrijken van de jaren het werk van sommige kunstenaars aan zeggingskracht toeneemt. Zo kent het late werk van meesters als Rembrandt, Picasso en Manet een eigen plek in de kunstgeschiedenis. Ook het late werk van Ed Valk wordt getypeerd door een doorleefde intensiteit.
In tegenstelling tot Willem van Veldhuizen tekent Ed Valk op menselijke en expressieve wijze en accentueert juist karakteristieke trekken waarmee hij de herkenbaarheid en tastbaarheid van zijn modellen vergroot. Hij plaatst de figuren nauwgezet op papier en zet met (kleur)potlood soms in combinatie met gouache, inkt en aquarel de werkelijkheid naar zijn hand. De lijnvoering in het werk van Ed Valk is teer, maar altijd trefzeker. Het eindresultaat levert steeds een indringend portret op.
