Meest bekende oorlogsfotograaf

'Wat ik vastleg', zegt Nachtwey, 'zal eeuwig deel uitmaken van onze collectieve herinnering. En ik weet, dat foto's de verantwoordelijken tot handelen kunnen dwingen. Zonder de beelden van de burgeroorlog en honger in Somalië had niemand daar ingegrepen. Zonder de foto's uit Bosnië was de oorlog misschien nog steeds niet beëindigd.' Sinds 1986 is James Nachtwey lid van het befaamde foto-agentschap Magnum. Hij won verschillende prijzen waaronder twee keer The World Press Photo of the Year en vier maal de Robert Capa Medaille. De tentoonstelling in de fotogalerie van de Kunsthal toont een keuze uit de series die Nachtwey over burgeroorlogen maakte. De tentoonstelling is een STERN-fototentoonstelling.
