This coming spring, the Kunsthal is inviting its visitors to enter the realm of animal art. The exhibition ‘We Are Animals’ features a great variety of extraordinary animal creations by contemporary artists. Works by artists such as Maurizio Cattelan, Paul McCarthy, David Shrigley and Candida Höfer showcase the relationship between human beings and animals, but above all reveal how we, as humans, are trying to look at and understand ourselves better through animals.

Feathered polar bears and wild wolves

‘We Are Animals’ explores all the different aspects of this theme, both through edgy perspectives on how humans are manipulating other animal species, and through admiring and celebrating these weird and wonderful creatures that we have so much in common with. The artistic research into the relationship between human beings and animals is expressed in the form of sculptures of feathered polar bears, installations with wild wolves, monumental paintings of pettable cats, and poignant photographs of zoos. With its provocative selection of works in various disciplines, this exciting exhibition provides food for thought.

The exhibition will be opened on Thursday evening 4 February during Art Rotterdam week. ‘We Are Animals’ is realised in collaboration with ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.
