In collaboration with the Willem de Kooning Academy, every year, the Kunsthal Rotterdam presents a series of masterclasses – exclusively for students and Kunsthal Friends – by exceptional artists. After the inspiring masterclasses by such figures as photographer Peter Lindbergh, photographer and artist Erwin Olaf, choreographer Conny Janssen, architect Rem Koolhaas, artists Melanie Bonajo and fashion artists Viktor&Rolf, it is the turn of artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde. On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Action<-> Reaction. 100 years of Kinetic Art’, Daan Roosegaarde will give a masterclass on Wednesday 24 October on the theme ‘From shit to beauty’.
In his masterclass, Daan Roosegaarde will talk about his practice and sources of inspiration as well as going more deeply into the theme 'From shit to beauty'. How can you influence your surroundings and make them better and more beautiful? What opportunities do your surroundings offer? He will also discuss a few selected student portfolios. The official language of the masterclass is English.
Daan Roosegaarde
Daan Roosegaarde (1979) is a creative thinker and maker of social designs which explore the relation between people, technology and space. His fascination for nature and technology is reflected in his iconic designs such as Smart Highway (roads which charge from sunlight and glow at night), Smog Free Project (the largest outdoor air purifier in the world which makes jewellery from smog) and WATERLICHT, a virtual flood that will be presented in the Museumpark in Rotterdam from 25 to 27 October.
Roosegaarde graduated from The Berlage Institute with a master in architecture. He founded Studio Roosegaarde in 2007, where he works with his team of designers and engineers towards a better future. Together they develop ‘Landscapes of the Future’ building smart sustainable prototypes for the cities of tomorrow. Roosegaarde is a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum and named Artist of the Year 2016 in The Netherlands.
