FILM: THE SQUARE

The evening starts with the advance première of The Square by Ruben Östlund, this year’s Golden Palm winner at the Cannes film festival. In this satirical drama, the life of art curator Christian (Claes Bang) is completely derailed following a PR stunt for his latest exhibition, The Square. The respected curator hires an edgy PR agency to attract more visitors to the museum, but the ‘playful’ campaign they come up with quickly gets totally out of control...

Like in his last hit Turist (IFFR 2015), in his latest film Ӧstlund exposes human failings while probing the boundaries of freedom of expression and political correctness. In this biting satire of the art world, the filmmaker again makes use of surrealism and hard-hitting humour.

Exhibition: Paul Delvaux

After the film, visitors to MASH-UP! will have exclusive access to the big retrospective exhibition Paul Delvaux. Master of the Dream. Belgian artist Paul Delvaux (1897-1994) is well-known for his mysterious, dreamy visual imagery combining elements from art movements such as Expressionism, Surrealism and Symbolism. Themes such as the female body and solitude are central to the mysterious world he creates through his paintings. Delvaux is seen as one of the most important Belgian Surrealists, although he himself did not like the idea of being pigeonholed in this way.

Exhibition: Cat love

As a bonus – it is the 25th anniversary after all! – after the film the audience will also be able to see the exhibition Cat Love. Nine Lives in the Arts. This exhibition shows how the cat has been depicted in art since the mid-nineteenth century. Stroll through this exceptional collection of cat-related art and get under the skin of your favourite feline during a crash-course in lazing, or take part in the catcall karaoke.

LIVE MUSIC AND ANNIVERSARY PARTY

During the exhibitions visitors can enjoy live music, performed between the works of art. All of this will be followed by the big MASH-UP! party in the Kunsthal Café, where you can dance and celebrate 25 years of the Kunsthal!

Tickets for the advance première of The Square are sold out. Tickets for the party and exhibitions are still available.
